How did Ed’s Tree Service get started?: A MD tree service company
Alice recalls how the business started with humble beginnings and grew into the reputable Maryland tree care company it is today:
“I was dating Ed back in 1982, and I saw him try out several different businesses until he started doing landscaping and tree work in the area. Then we started producing flyers to pass out, and the business continued to grow. So then we started advertising in the Yellow Pages or in neighborhood papers. It grew—it took a while—but now, after 40 years, it’s an amazing business. We have about 15 employees and a large number of clientele in our database.”
What inspired you to be a part of the tree care industry? 
Alice’s journey into the tree care industry wasn’t something she had originally planned, but her passion grew as she became more involved in the business.
“I was really inspired by the tree care business. I grew up in Florida, where we don’t really have large trees. I never knew what a tree business was, never knew you could make money on trees. I was also working for the government as an engineer, and I was very bored. I always wanted to own a business, but I wasn’t sure what kind. So I figured I’d own a tree service, and I could run the business, and Ed could do the tree work along with his employees.”

“That’s how it started, and then it’s just grown over the years. But I just love the trees in this area—I just think they’re magnificent monuments. The beauty of trees… I do the estimates, so I get to walk through people’s yards and gardens and just admire the trees and landscaping every day.
Our tree care company in Maryland has been around for 40 years. We offer personal service—I, as the owner, do the estimates myself, and sometimes with the help of one of my other employees if it gets too busy. Most of my workers have been with me for 10, 20, 30 years.
I think of it as a family business, and I support my employees in any way I can. I think that the love of this business comes through with the work that we perform.”
