Challenges and Surprises from Tree Removal Professionals in MD: Q&A with Alice

When it comes to caring for your trees, few people know more than Alice, the lead arborist and estimator at Ed’s Tree Service. With over 25 years of experience, Alice has worked every job in the company—from climbing trees to overseeing estimates and operations. As one of the co-founders of this woman-owned business, she brings a unique mix of hands-on knowledge and engineering expertise to every job. Today, Alice shares some of the most surprising and challenging aspects of professional tree care in Maryland.

Q: Have you ever worked on a particularly challenging tree project?

A: “The most challenging  projects can be when trees are on a house, because you have to make sure you take sections off at a time to keep the tree from moving or caving into the house. You have to keep certain supports of the tree before you decide to remove certain sections – so those are the most challenging jobs. But we have done thousands of tree removals from houses, so we are experts at doing this type of work.

Q: What’s one thing about tree care that surprises most people?

A: You need to prune your trees about every five years, which a lot of people don’t realize that your tree naturally has common dieback, and new growth that makes your tree dense and thick. So that’s why we recommend to take care of your trees about every five years, or trimming from your house, trimming from structures, trimming from driveways. Trees continually grow, branches continually die – so you have to stay on top and maintain and prune your trees, or remove trees if they are in decline and die. But about every five years you should at least have them checked out.”
